Etsy Offsite Ads: The 12–15% Fee Most Sellers Don't See Coming

Updated May 26, 2026

Most Etsy sellers know about the 6.5% transaction fee. Fewer notice that Offsite Ads can quietly add another 12–15% on top — only on specific sales, but it’s the single largest fee surprise on the platform.

What Offsite Ads actually is

Etsy runs ads on Google, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, and Bing using your listings. If a buyer clicks one of those ads and purchases within 30 days, Etsy charges you an Offsite Ads fee on that sale. You don’t choose which listings are promoted or when.

The two rates

Your Etsy sales in the last 12 monthsOffsite Ads fee
Under $10,00015%
$10,000 or more12%

Sellers under $10,000/year can opt out in Shop Manager → Marketing → Offsite Ads. Sellers at $10,000+ cannot opt out — participation is mandatory.

What the fee applies to

The 15% (or 12%) is charged on the total order amount — item price plus any shipping you charged. It’s based on the same total that the 6.5% transaction fee applies to.

Real example: a $40 sale with Offsite Ads

Standard Etsy fees on a $40 sale (US seller, under $10k/year):

FeeAmount
Listing fee$0.20
Transaction fee (6.5%)$2.60
Payment processing (3% + $0.25)$1.45
Subtotal without Offsite Ads$4.25 (10.6%)
Offsite Ads fee (15%)$6.00
Total with Offsite Ads$10.25 (25.6%)

That’s one in four dollars going to fees on an Offsite Ads sale.

How to tell if a sale came from Offsite Ads

In your Etsy dashboard, orders that triggered the fee are labeled. The fee also appears as a line item in your Payment Account statement — look for “Offsite Ads fee” on the date of the sale.

Should you opt out if you can?

For most sellers under $10,000/year, yes — opting out is usually the right call unless you’re selling items with very high margins. Here’s why:

If you sell premium items with 50%+ margins, the extra traffic can be worth the cut. If you’re selling lower-margin handmade items, the math often doesn’t work.

Build the fee into your prices

If you’re mandatory (over $10k/year), price as if every sale could carry the 12% Offsite Ads fee. That means you need enough margin to absorb it without going into the red.

A simple rule: add 12–15% to your target net profit when setting your price, so that an Offsite Ads sale still hits your floor.
