Amazon FBA vs FBM: Which Makes You More Money? (2026)
Amazon’s referral fee is the same whether you use FBA or FBM. The difference is everything else — storage, pick-and-pack, and shipping — which can flip a profitable product into a money-loser depending on size, weight, and price.
What FBA and FBM actually cost
FBA (Fulfilled by Amazon) Amazon stores, picks, packs, and ships your products. You pay:
- Referral fee (same as FBM): 8–15%, varies by category
- FBA fulfillment fee: per-unit charge based on size and weight
- Monthly storage: $0.78/cubic foot (Jan–Sep) or $2.40/cubic foot (Oct–Dec)
Small standard items (under 1 lb): fulfillment fee roughly $3.22–$3.86 Large standard items (1–3 lb): roughly $5.40–$6.50
FBM (Fulfilled by Merchant) You store and ship yourself. You pay:
- Referral fee only on the Amazon side
- Your own packaging + actual shipping cost (e.g., USPS, UPS, FedEx)
- Your own storage cost (warehouse, garage, storage unit)
Worked example: $20 item, 0.5 lb
Assume 15% referral fee, actual shipping cost $4.50 (FBM), FBA fee $3.22.
| FBA | FBM | |
|---|---|---|
| Sale price | $20.00 | $20.00 |
| Referral fee (15%) | -$3.00 | -$3.00 |
| FBA fulfillment fee | -$3.22 | — |
| Your shipping cost | — | -$4.50 |
| Net before COGS | $13.78 | $12.50 |
FBA wins here because Amazon’s shipping rates (negotiated at massive scale) beat what a small seller pays at the post office.
Worked example: $50 item, 2 lb
Assume 15% referral, shipping cost $8.00 (FBM), FBA fee $5.40.
| FBA | FBM | |
|---|---|---|
| Sale price | $50.00 | $50.00 |
| Referral fee (15%) | -$7.50 | -$7.50 |
| FBA fee / shipping | -$5.40 | -$8.00 |
| Net before COGS | $37.10 | $34.50 |
FBA still ahead, but only because Amazon’s bulk shipping rates beat $8.
When FBM wins
Large or heavy items. FBA fees scale steeply with size and weight. A 10 lb item can carry an FBA fee of $14–20+. If you can ship it yourself for $9, FBM wins.
Slow-moving inventory. FBA charges long-term storage fees on items sitting more than 365 days ($6.90/cubic foot). A product that sells slowly can rack up storage charges that quietly erase margin over months.
Products you make or customize. If each item is made to order, FBA doesn’t fit the workflow — you’d have to batch-produce and send inventory to Amazon’s warehouses before orders exist.
High-margin, premium items. When each sale earns you $40+, the FBM shipping cost is a small fraction of profit and you keep full control over packaging and presentation.
When FBA wins
Light, small, fast-moving items. The FBA fee on a 0.5 lb item is often cheaper than any realistic shipping rate, plus Amazon Prime eligibility drives more sales.
You want to scale without hiring. FBA removes picking, packing, and trips to the post office entirely. Time saved has real value.
Competitive categories. Prime badge gives FBA listings a visibility advantage in search results. In a crowded category, that alone can tip the math.
The hidden variable: your time
FBM has an invisible cost — your labor. Packing and shipping 30 orders a day takes real hours. At some volume FBM stops being viable unless you hire help, which adds fixed costs FBA doesn’t have.
